From Not-so-Classic Raffia Silhouettes to Floppy Cotton Creations, These Summer Hats Are Made to Turn Heads

While many of us focus on finding the perfect pair(s) of sunglasses and a sunscreen formula that won’t break us out, there’s another, sometimes forgotten way to shield ourselves from the sun. Summer hats are a very necessary tool to add extra sartorial points to any look. Not to mention shading your face from the harsh sun. Similar to seasons of the past, there’s a fresh crop of gigantic sunhats designed with shock value in mind. This isn’t one of those instances when go big or go home applies, however. Whether you’re a champion of those flying saucer-rivaling raffia hats or more partial to baseball caps or even visors, there’s something to indulge every taste.

Most prominent is definitely the raffia/straw category. There may be only two materials to choose from, but there’s a lot of variety. You need to narrow down what type of topper you’re looking for. If you consider yourself more of a purest, see Loewe’s logo-bearing sunhat. There’s also Eugenia Kim’s Mirabel straw number featuring a satin polka dot scarf. COS offers a cost-conscious way to embrace the trend with its black Wide-Brim Raffia Hat for under $140. Armani’s patterned straw hat includes fun fringed edges. Prada’s raffia number is on the quirkier side with its rounded, bucket hat-like dome and a baseball cap-esque adjustable strap in the back.

Bucket hats are another admired take. Burberry’s Woven Raffia Bucket Hat comes in a partially pastel pink colorway. Eugenia Kim’s Jonah Raffia Bucket Hat counts as a neutral, but its see-through nature makes it unique. The silhouette even comes in cotton forms. Miu Miu’s crisp white Cotton Poplin Bucket Hat comes complete with straps. Alémais’ Margo Printed Cotton-Twill Sunhat skips the straps and instead extends the colorful patterned brim exponentially. If you’re into the whole larger-than-life brim vibe, check out Pucci’s Manuba Cotton Hat, which is reversible so it’s like getting two toppers for one price.

All the aforementioned styles are relatively standard summer fare. Although there is one type that’s a little surprising: the cowboy hat. Sure, they’ve made previous appearances in the straw grouping. This time, courtesy of Miu Miu, the hat takes a different tone crafted from “light and versatile drill enriched by an elegant leather strap.” Choose from a chill ecru or a navy-like Hematite.
